A magnetic field flows from a north pole to a south pole. A magnetic field line shows the direction in which  a protona south poleboth polesa north pole would feel a force. Only some materials are attracted to a magnet, such as  carbon and oxygengold and silvermagnesium and manganeseiron and nickel.
Some magnets produce their own magnetic field all the time; these are known as  inducedbarhorseshoepermanent magnets. Others only become magnetic when placed in a magnetic field; these are known as  motorinducedsolenoidpermanent magnets.
A wire carrying a current produces a magnetic field; the magnetic field lines  move in circles around the wire at certain pointspoint directly out of the wireflow from one end of the wire to the othermove in circles around the wire, along its entire length.  An electromagnetA solenoidA transformerA permanent magnet is a current-carrying wire wrapped into a long coil, so that the magnetic field lines are in the same shape as those for a bar magnet;  coating the wire in plasticadding an iron core in the middleadding another coilincreasing the current turns this into an electromagnet and increases the strength of the magnetic field produced.
