Alkenes have fewer hydrogen atoms than their analogous alkanes, so are called  unsaturatedmonomericuncondensedcondensedsaturatedpolymeric. They can also be distinguished from alkanes using the bromine water test; for example, when ethene reacts with aqueous bromine, the product formed is  C2Br4CH2Br2CH3BrC3H6Br2C2H3BrC2H4Br2.

Both alkanes and alkenes undergo  reductionoxidationelectrolysiseliminationhydrolysisaddition reactions when they burn. If there is insufficient oxygen, this is called incomplete combustion, and it can result in the formation of soot and  hydrogen peroxideozonehydrogencarbon dioxidegraphenegraphite, rather than just carbon dioxide and water from complete combustion.
