Aqueous solutions can also be electrolysed, but OH⁻ and  C⁺O²⁻H⁺S⁺Na⁺K⁺ ions are also present due to the water. If the metal is  more solublemore concentratedmore conductivemore reactivewarmermore volatile than hydrogen, then  the metala metal carbonatehydrogenwatera metal oxideoxygen is produced at the negative electrode.  OxygenCarbon dioxideWaterMethaneHydroxideSodium is produced at the positive electrode, unless the non-metal is a halide, in which case  a halogenoalkanea halogenan alkoxidean alcoholan alkali metala halidon is produced.
