A build-up of charge is known as  insulationsparkingstaticno current electricity. Charge can only build up on  chargedcoldconductinginsulating materials because the charge cannot dissipate.
When two objects rub against each other,  protonsnucleielectronsions are transferred from one material to the other, causing the two objects to become oppositely charged, so they  charge upattractstore energyrepel. When charge builds up like this, there is a potential difference between the oppositely charged objects. If the potential difference increases enough, there is  a sparkthundera shockstatic as charges jump across the gap. This can be very dangerous as it can ignite flammable materials or gases, so, in factories or petrol stations, objects need to be  heatedzeroedgroundedcooled to stop this from happening. One useful application of static electricity is in pesticide sprays; the aerosol droplets are all given the same electrostatic charge as they leave the spray nozzle, meaning that they  fly outwardsattract each otherrepel each otherare sprayed and spread out covering a wide area. Their charge also means they are  sucked towardsattracted toattracted bypulled towards the neutral plant material that is being sprayed.
A charged object produces  a magnetic fielda force fieldan ionising auraan electric field around itself, where other charged objects experience a force. This is stronger  close to the charged objectbetween two like chargesfar from the charged objectbetween two opposite charges.
