Electrolysis is a method used to convert ions in  a gasa mixturea solidan aqueous solution into pure  elementssaltselectronsmetals. Two rods, called electrodes, are inserted into the  groundelectrolytemixture powderplasma, and the ions move to the electrode with the opposite  materialchargepHtemperature. At the electrodes, the ions are  dischargedpressuriseddeionisedheated.

Aqueous solutions can also be electrolysed, but OH⁻ and  H⁺C⁺Na⁺K⁺ ions are also present due to the water. If the metal is  more reactivewarmermore conductivemore soluble than hydrogen, then  waterthe metaloxygenhydrogen is produced at the negative electrode.  HydroxideCarbon dioxideMethaneOxygen is produced at the positive electrode, unless the non-metal is a halide, in which case  an alkoxidea halidonan alkali metala halogen is produced.

Electrolysis involves oxidation and  deoxidationreductionhydrolysisaddition reactions, which can be represented using  electrodeheathalfionic-equations.
