Andy: No! I can never agree that zoos are a good thing. It's absolutely 100% wrong to keep wild animals in captivity. How can you possibly think differently?
Daffyd: I can see that you're passionate about this, Andy, but can you explain why you feel that way?
Andy: I grew up in Kenya and I've seen elephants and lions and zebra and giraffes in the wild. There's no possible way that zoos can recreate the natural habitats of these amazing animals.
Michelle: I understand that, Andy. But what about people like me who wouldn't be able to see these animals in real life if it wasn't for zoos?
Sahid: That's a good point, Michelle. In the research I've done, I read that 75% of people who regularly visit zoos are instrumental in supporting work to preserve the natural habitats of their favourite animals. These kind, generous, aware citizens give donations as well as being enthusiastic fundraisers.
Howie: Furthermore, my research has shown that zoos are also active campaigners for preserving natural habitats.
Sara: On the other hand, zoos take animals from the wild, Howie. Removing them just means that the emphasis on protecting their natural habitats becomes less important and we'll end up with more and more wild animals in captivity and fewer and fewer in their natural homes.
Andy: Exactly, Sara. That's exactly what I'm worried about.
