Leaders are significant characters in team sports and possess many features that could either contribute to the achievement of common goals or result in the collapse of team performance. It is important that leaders display positive characteristics to make sure their role is effective.

Characteristics of effective leaders:

It is said that there are two ways leaders are made. Leaders can come either from within a group (  democraticemergentinnateautocratic leaders) or from outside the group (  prescribedlaissez-fairechosenascribed leaders). Those who come from within the group are usually highly skilled and respected by their teammates, otherwise they wouldn't be favoured as a leader. However, they can sometimes lack the necessary team management skills due to   inexperienceexperiencelack of patiencelack of time. An example would be the club captain at a football team. A leader who comes from outside the group would possess these management skills, and their high status helps to earn them respect. However, they may have a more difficult time getting their views accepted by the group due to a lack of empathy and knowledge of the team’s dynamic. An example would be a football manager who has had no prior association with the club they are newly in charge of.
