is an umbrella term and it refers to an employee having their employment contract terminated. There are two main ways: to fire an employee or to make them redundant.
Employees who are have done something wrong against the terms of their employment contract. Reasons might include stealing from the employer, drinking on the job or taking too much time off.
Employees who are made have not done anything wrong, but the business finds itself in a position that it needs to reduce the staff numbers. In some cases the business may be closing entirely, making all the staff redundant. In other cases, due to financial difficulties some businesses may need to reduce the workforce size. It may ask for volunteers to take redundancy or use a last-in-first-out system to decide who loses their job.
Employee relations means employees are using to negotiate agreements in pay and conditions at work. There are over 100 unions which employees can join in the UK, including Unite, UNISON, NUT and NASUWT. Employees will choose a union based on their ; for example, there are separate unions for teachers, surgeons and cabin crew.
Employees will pay a fee to the union each month and in return the union will carry out with the owners or managers of the business. This can be more effective than one person alone trying to negotiate better pay rates with the company.
