Blood Brothers was published in  1960196319801985 and is set in  LondonEdinburghLiverpoolBristol in the  1950s1940s1990s1960s.

The two families, the Johnstones and the Lyons, show us how two different sides of society live: Mrs Johnstone is a struggling single parent with seven children, not counting the twins; on the other hand, the Lyons are   a wealthya traditionala middle-classa working-class couple who live in relative comfort. It is the different lifestyle that Mrs Lyons has that confirms to Mrs Johnstone that her baby will be better off with the Lyons, 'Looking up in awe at the comparative opulence and  goodnesslifewealthease of the place'.

Willy Russell uses moving to the  mountainscityvillagecountry as a symbol of hope for a better life for Mrs Johnstone and  a changeclosurean escapehope for Mrs Lyons. Initially, Mrs Johnstone is shown to be much happier after her fresh start; however, Willy Russell suggests that the struggles Mrs Lyons has with  mental ill healthworkMrs Johnstoneguilt are not so easily fixed.
