Key theme 1: Reason versus emotion. Sherlock Holmes and  Mrs HudsonTongaAthelney JonesDr Watson have one of the most famous friendships in English literature, but they have very different personalities. Holmes also says “Love is an emotional thing, and whatever is emotional is opposed to that true cold  reasonemotionsensitivitysensibility which I place above all things”. Key theme 2: Love. Dr Watson grows to love  Mrs Forrester Mary MorstanMrs BernstoneMrs Hudson. He admires Mary from their first meeting by describing her as   interestingboringdaintydull. At the end of the novel, Dr Watson tells Holmes that he is going to become   her butlerher loverher uncleher husband.
