In addition there is a build-up of tension, a climax and a final twist. The development of the plot exposes how each of the Birlings and are linked to the events leading to Eva's/Daisy’s death. The Inspector’s method of examining “one line of enquiry at a time” allows the tension to build up to the climax, as each revelation seems more shocking than the last. The climax of the play comes when the Inspector states that each of the characters helped to kill Eva/Daisy. In many ways the development of the plot can be seen as a journey for two of the main characters: Sheila and Eva/Daisy. For the journey is from ignorance and prejudice to enlightenment and better awareness of social issues. In complete contrast the journey for Eva/Daisy is one from her hopefulness at the beginning of the play, through to her poverty due to her sacking (firstly from the factory and then from Milwards), and finally to the events leading to her despair and suicide.
