There are a variety of  BooksRecordsSurahsDiaries within Islamic literature that talk about the nature of suffering - one important chapter is Qur'an  76778180:1-31. 

It speaks about the nature of  DawudIbn RushdMuhammadAllah - that there has never been a time when he has not been. 

It also talks about the   wealthsufferingfunhappiness that will be inflicted on those who are  unrighteousfaithfulrighteoussuffering in the afterlife - this suggests that suffering can be viewed within Islamic thought to be as a  rewardresultawardpunishment for sin. 

Conversely, the  non-believerssinnersrighteousdancers will be rewarded for their good deeds on earth in the afterlife - this shows that while those who do bad deeds will be punished, good deeds will also be rewarded.
