As developments and discoveries have provided alternatives to religious accounts of creation, now there is a debate regarding whether or not religion and can be compatible in their ideas about the origin of the world.
The main scientific theory about the origin of the universe is the which was originally put forward in the 1920s. This is the idea that there was a large explosion of the matter in existence, due to the density and temperature. This explosion is believed to have taken place approximately 14 years ago. This explosion expanded very quickly, creating elements of the universe such as stars and the sun. Eventually, the earth formed from various matter such as dust, and over the course of years cooled to the point where life could exist. The majority of accept this as the most logical account of the creation of the world.
There are multiple positions in this debate. Some people believe that science is the only way to understand the world, and that religion is as a result. These people would argue that the modern age has given us enough information to explain our existence without God and, therefore, that religion has no place in modern society.
Others might believe that religion and science can work . They might understand the Big Bang theory as supporting religious theories of creation, as it corroborates the idea of there being event which caused the world to exist. However, Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the ultimate authority; therefore, if science ever contradicts the Qur'an then Muslims will believe the Qur'an.
