Belief in the  souljudgement dayexistence of deathafterlife is key to Islam, as parts of the afterlife feature in the key beliefs of Islam (the Five Roots of Usul ad-Din in Shi'a Islam and the Six Articles of Faith in Sunni Islam). 

Muslims believe in both the existence of life after death and an afterlife which is known as  BarzakhLifeAkhirahPurgatory.

Following death, Muslims believe there is a period where you will be in your grave, and visited by  morticianscorpseszombiesangels who will ask you a series of questions regarding your actions in life. Your answers will determine whether you are going to heaven, known as  HajjHannahSawmJannah, or hell, which is known as  HajjAkhirahJannahJahannam. This waiting period is known as  HajjSawmSalahBarzakh

Muslims believe that while they are  in purgatorydeadaliveconscious their actions are written down in the Book of  DeedsChoicesDeathActions. This is believed to be used to judge them following death.
