One of the biggest problems facing timber suppliers is finding sustainable timber sources. Too much logging has resulted in  over supplydeforestationaccidentsfair trade in certain countries around the world resulting in the reduction of some species of trees.

Trees are cut down, a process known as  fellingseasoningcuppingslicing, before they are sawn into sections ready to be seasoned. Seasoning is the process used to remove and reduce the  moisture contentbranchestwigsbark before it can be used.

Manufactured boards such as  MDFfoil-lined boardbalsawoodcardboard, are commonly used in the manufacture of flat-packed furniture.

Manufactured boards come in a range of standard thicknesses including  17 mm15 mm13 mm5 mm. Thinner thicknesses of plywood, another manufactured board, are used for  vacuum formingpressinglaminatingcasting into permanently formed two dimensional shapes.

Manufactured boards are often finished with  stainveneerwaxpaper to preserve natural timbers, meaning they last longer.

There are many different types of joint that can be used to join timber and the most decorative is a  mortise and tenonhousingbuttdovetail joint.

An abrasive paper used to smooth timber is  wet and dry papergrass paperrice paperglasspaper. The coarsest or roughest of these papers is  1202404060 grit.

Timber products such as fence panels are subject to a special finish known as  galvanisingtanalisingwaxingpainting so that they can withstand the rain and wet conditions they will be exposed to.
