When a metal reacts with oxygen,  an alkali metala metal oxidea pure metala metal carbonatea metal acida salt is formed. Many metals can be placed in an order of reactivity, called  a reduction groupan oxidation columna general seriesa displacement sequencea reactivity seriesa homologous series, by observing their reactions with water or  dilute acidsilver nitrateethanolcopper sulfatenitrogencarbon dioxide, because more reactive metals will react more  orderlyconsistentlypredictablyslowlyvigorouslysustainably.

Some metals, such as  sodiumirongoldlithiummagnesiumcalcium, are considered unreactive, and are found pure in nature. Other metals have to be  extracteddugevaporatedneutralisedacidifiedpolymerised from their ores. This is usually done by  a reductionan extractiona deoxidationa precipitationa carbonisationa demagnetising reaction, where the metal loses oxygen. The metal oxide reacts with  carboncarbonic acidwaterhydrogena metal carbonatecarbon monoxide to form the pure metal and carbon dioxide.
